What is Intellectual Property?
Intellectual property refers to creations of human mind or human intellect. There are two types:-
(a) Industrial Property that includes patents, trademarks, industrial designs and geographical indications.
(b) Copyright that includes literary works (e.g., books, poems and plays), films, music, artistic works (e.g., drawings, paintings, and photographs), architectural designs and computer programs.
What are intellectual property rights?
Intellectual property rights are exclusive right or monopoly right given to inventors, brand owner, patent holder and copyright holder to protect their creations of the intellect. The importance of intellectual property was first recognized through international treaties administered by World Intellectual Property Organization namely, the Paris Convention towards protection of industrial property such as patents, trademarks and industrial designs and the Berne Convention for the protection of literary and artistic works.
